North Ethical Shareholders
North Ltd. is a major Australian company, a substantial employer in Australian and overseas.
It is one of the world's major iron ore miners.
It exports woodchips produced from clearfelled Tasmanian native forests.
It is the majority owner of Energy Resources Australia (ERA), which operates the established Ranger and the new Jabiluka uranium mines within the boundary of the Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage Area.
As North shareholders we are anxious for the financial health of our company, our share price, our dividends, and franking credits.
We are also anxious for North's long term viability, and the security of its employees.
We would like to see board and management share in the gains, and the pains, of shareholders and employees.
In the light of oversupply, and declining prices for Uranium we have some concerns regarding the financial future of the Jabiluka project.
As members of the public we also have concerns regarding:
- the rights of the Aboriginal Traditional owners of the land
- the environmental dangers of uranium and its byproducts
- mining within a National Park and World Heritage Area
- the political danger resulting from encouragement of neighbouring countries to become nuclear powers
The group is new, having formed in mid 1999 as a result of some shareholders' worries over the Jabiluka mine project, which has attracted a great amount of media coverage.
